Candle or wax – which crayons to choose?

Although for many people they are one and the same and use these names interchangeably, both products are slightly different from each other. However, both candle and wax crayons are a perfect complement to the school layette for toddlers. Which ones to choose and how to use them? We suggest – check it out! Wax vs candle: what’s the difference?

First of all, they have different compositions. Wax – as the name suggests, they are made of beeswax. The wax crayons contain paraffin. Wax crayons have slightly better covering properties and leave a pleasant smell, but this does not mean that candle crayons are worse. Both types of products are waterproof, dust-free and easy to wash. In addition, they do not need to be sharpened and rarely break.

How to use crayons?

This can be done in many ways – from filling in coloring books by toddlers, to creating creative images – by slightly older children. To do this, just prepare candle crayons and a sheet of paper that you can paint, for example, on black. Then light the candle and have the child hold the selected crayon in a horizontal position over the flame. Then, with a slightly melted end, let him paint selected patterns on paper with different colors, e.g. flowers and leaves. Due to the rather thick layer of colors applied to the card, the drawing looks three-dimensional. The effect is really impressive.

A scratcher is also a great suggestion. Let the child prepare a piece of paper – preferably from Bristol board and paint it in any way with crayons. Then let him cover the painting with poster paint. When it dries, just take a sharpened stick or a toothpick in your hand and start scratching your own picture. It’s not only great fun, but also exercises for the precision of movements.

Where will wax crayons work?

They are a great choice for toddlers when learning to draw and grip. This will make it easier to learn to write later. Wax crayons are easy to paint over the entire surface. Among their greatest advantages are:

• color intensity,
• excellent covering properties,
• high comfort of use.

Due to the fact that they are very soft, you can freely combine colors when using them. It is a good choice for the youngest children who do not yet have a skilled hand and a lot of pressure. Wax crayons are perfect for both drawing and coloring. They are perfect for creating laurels and similar works. They can be used on all types of paper, as well as on wooden and porous surfaces.

They are also used in the batik technique, e.g. for painting Easter eggs. It is enough for children to make a drawing on a boiled egg, and then dip the egg in a dye that dyes only the places not colored with crayons. After drying, polish the Easter egg with a soft cloth.

You can also make batik on paper. Let the children draw any patterns on a piece of paper and then paint over it. They will get a beautiful drawing.

Unusual use of colored pencils: get inspired with Astra!

Making men or other creatures using different materials is a great idea for great fun for a small artist. Have fun with him. To do this, prepare silicone molds, Astra crayons and a sharpener or a grater. Then rub the colored pencils and place their filings in the mold. After filling it, put the mold in the preheated oven. When the shavings melt, remove the figures and set them aside to cool. Then take out the colored figures and play with them.

Another great idea to use candle crayons and wax crayons is to sharpen or rub them on grater and scattering shavings on a white sheet. Then cover the whole thing with parchment paper – it can be used for baking and iron it with a hot iron.
